Welcome back! I have an exciting post to share with you all today—my makeup and skin care picks from the Sephora VIB Holiday Bonus sale. I always stock up on my favorite products during this sale because Sephora rarely offers discounts or coupons on their full priced products.
This year, you will see that I purchased a LOT of skincare items. To be honest, my skin has been in pretty bad shape lately, so I’ve been on the hunt to find the right products for my skin. It’s nothing that makeup cannot cover up, but I would love to not have to slather foundation on my face every day for my skin to look even and normal.
I have been following Dr. Dray on YouTube for a while now. She is a dermatologist who posts videos on a variety of health concerns, including reviews of certain skincare products. I highly recommend her if you’re looking for a scientific and educational point of view on skin care.
The other day she was reviewing Tatcha (an expensive line of skincare at Sephora) and I was surprised to hear that she would not recommend any of their products due to certain fragrances and other harmful ingredients. I am admittedly a skin care snob and I ignorantly assumed that if a company is charging you $60 for a face wash, it must be good for you, right? Something she said really resonated with me: keep it simple when it comes to skin care. You skin does not need to be scrubbed or toned with rubbing alcohol.
With all of that being said, I switched over to a simple, fragrance free routine and I’m really happy with my results so far! I have been trying to use natural, vegan products as much as possible. In case you are interested, here is my current skin care routine.
I do face masks two to three times a week, some of my favorites include:
T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial by Drunk Elephant—click here to read my full review on this product. It is a GAME changer!
Let’s jump into what I bought from the Sephora sale!
U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil – SUNDAY RILEY
This is quick-absorbing, medicated dry oil to clear congested pores, treat and prevent acne, and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for clearer, smoother skin. It contains 1.5 % Salicylic Acid, in addition to tea tree oil and other skin-brightening ingredients. The oil also contains milk thistle, cucumber seed oil and chamomile to nourish the skin and counteract any drying effects.
After washing my face, using micellar water to remove any left over makeup, and using a spot treatment on any acne, I apply three drops directly onto my skin and gently rub in.
I would recommend using this at night only, as the oil does not fully absorb, which doesn’t bother me, but may bother some people. I will also say that this oil has an interesting smell. It’s very herbal—it kind of smells like Oregano. However, I would rather my skincare smell natural than have fake perfume fragrance, so this does not bother me.
I’ve used it for a couple of weeks and I will say I am seeing AMAZING results. I have seen a drastic reduction in the blackheads in my T zone, and my skin has never looked so clear. I will have to give a full update when I use the product for at least three months, but so far I really enjoy it.
The Mighties Kit – Farmacy
I have heard great things about the Farmacy brand at Sephora. They are a farm-to-face skincare company that is locally produced in the United States. All of their products are paraben, formaldehyde, phthalate, mineral oil, cruelty and synthetic fragrance free. Their packaging is also made of 100% recyclable materials, which is incredible. I thought the best way to try out some of their products would be to buy a sample kit. This one includes:
Green Clean: a hydrating cleansing balm that removes makeup.
Honey Drop: a lightweight, long-lasting moisturizer that contains antioxidant-rich ingredients such as, Echinacea GreenEnvy, Honey, triple hyaluronic acid complex and golden cupuaçu butter beads.
Sleep Tight: a balm-to-oil formula packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, which firms the skin as you sleep
Honey Potion: an antioxidant-rich face cream with healing propolis and royal jelly.
Dew It All: An eye cream treatment that helps minimize the signs of aging, stress, and fatigue.
Overall, I can’t speak to how these products perform, but if you are at all interested in trying this brand out I highly recommend grabbing this sample pack while it’s on sale!
This is a light weight face cream loaded with kale, spinach, and green tea and hyaluronic acid. It is 100% vegan and made from only natural ingredients.
I wanted a day cream that would sink into the skin quickly without making me oily through out the day.
This is a great moisturizer to use before you apply makeup as it sinks into the skin almost immediately. I’ve noticed that my skin has been less oily throughout the day, which is a huge plus for me. The only downside is that this does not have SPF in it, however, every single foundation I use has SPF in it, so I do get protection that way. If I am not wearing foundation for some reason, I will wear SPF over this. Overall, this product has not broken me out and I’m really liking it so far.
Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF 15 – Bobbi Brown
This is a 16-hour wear, buildable, medium to full coverage foundation with a natural, multidimensional matte finish that’s comfortable, breathable, and weightless. This foundation contains SPF 15 and promises to be non-acnegenic.
I was looking for a foundation geared toward oily skin, that would last all day at work. If you love the Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation you will love this. It is very full coverage, and it does last all day as long as you don’t touch your face. It is a little bit tacky going on (it’s not a runny formula at all), but as soon as you set it with a setting powder, it’s locked into place for the day and doesn’t feel like anything at all.
To be honest, I will probably save this for events and weekend wear, and look for something a little more light coverage for work. I personally feel like I don’t need to be full on glam for the office, but that’s just a personal preference. If you are looking for a full converge foundation you will love this.
According to Sephora’s website, this product was “engineered to intuitively target your hair’s needs for enhanced shine, vibrancy, and manageability delivered overnight, with results that last all week. It boosts shine for days with weightless radiance refractors that outperform silicones and oils. It delivers lasting color vibrancy by combining the patented healthy hair molecule (OFPMA) with long-lasting cuticle sealing technology to help smooth and seal down the cuticle and reduce pigment loss. And it improves hair’s manageability with amino acids that condition and protect strands, safeguarding against daily styling and environmental assaults.”
What attracted me to this product was how easy it is to use. You pump out the product in your hands, run through your hair and go to bed. I mean, what is better than a product that does all the work while you sleep?! I saturated my two day old hair while it was dry, although you can also apply it to wet, freshly washed hair. I’m not a huge fan of going to bed with wet hair, but I would imagine it would help penetrate the hair better. None of the less, when I washed my hair the next morning it was much easier to blow dry and style. I also definitely have fewer split ends. I’m going to try this on damp hair next time to see how it works. If you have the hair type where you can go to bed with wet hair and wake up without bed head (so jealous of you) this would be a great option for you.
Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 – Olaplex
A concentrated treatment that strengthens the hair from within, reducing breakage and improving its look and feel.
Olaplex products feature first-of-their-kind, patented, bond-building technology, which relinks the broken disulfide bonds caused by chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage to the hair.
Another hair product built to repair dry and damaged hair. I haven’t used this yet, but I will definitely give you all an update. I have heard SUCH amazing things about t his product—I actually heard this a treatment that you can receive in a salon.
This is a weightless, alcohol-free setting spray that locks in makeup for up to 24 hours of wear with next-level pollution protection.
I have been using the Urban Decay setting spray for a while now, and while I did like it, I’m trying to avoid spraying alcohol on my face, per Dr. Dray’s recommendation. What I like about this setting spray is that it is alcohol free, and it has a super fine mist that doesn’t leave water marks on your face.
This is a trio of pressed powder highlighters featuring three gorgeous shades—original Bar of Gold, soft pink-tinted rose gold, and deep shimmer bronze-gold.
This palette is STUNNING and I love how you get a variety of three different colors—rose gold, gold and bronze. It lasts pretty well on me, at least 6 hours. I like to spray a fan brush with my Cover FX Setting Spray (you can also use water) first and then apply the product to my cheek bones.
A beauty blender is a reusable, high-definition cosmetic sponge applicator.
I’ve purchased at least 30 of these in my life and I seriously will never go without one. The thought of applying foundation with a brush makes me cringe a little bit (brush mark lines!?). I love how evenly this sponge applies liquid foundation. To use, soak the beautyblender under the faucet, and then make sure you squeeze out all the access water with a paper towel or cloth before you use it on your face.
